Local newspapers were important to the community's success. <br />The Sherburne County Weekly was published ca. 1869-70. The <br />Sherburne County Star and the Elk River Weekly were <br />inaugurated in 1875. In 1882, Arthur N. Dare purchased both <br />papers as the Sherburne County Star News. <br /> <br />The steel bridge and the Elk River Milling Company flour mill ca. 1910. <br />Photo: SCHS. <br /> <br />Industrial Development after Ard Godfrey <br /> <br />Spurred by the agricultural economy, the northern Minnesota <br />lumber boom, and an expanding population, Elk River's small <br />flour and lumber milling industry prospered for many <br />decades. Saw milling was the leading manufacturing activity, <br />sustaining local companies and employees from 1851 into the <br />early twentieth century.
