Photo: MHS. <br /> <br />Place Names <br /> <br />In addition to Uppertown and Lowertown, which seem to still <br />be recognized by some residents as early names for Orono and <br />Elk River, respectively, there are several other place names of <br />historic significance. Meadowvale was a small settlement of <br />Hill, Bailey, and other families in the northwestern comer of <br />the township. Houlton's Observatory, a wooden tower on the <br />bluffs north of Elk River near Highway 77 and Ridgewood <br />Drive was built by W.H.
