City

Item 5~7.

MEMORANDUM

TO:

FROM:

Mayor and City Council

Stephen Rohlf, Building and Zoning Administrator

DATE:

September 9, 2002

SUBJECT: Goose Trapping Results

On July 2, 2002, the city once again solicited the services of Dr. James Cooper of the
University of Minnesota to remove geese from the city. Attached to this memo is a letter'
from Dr. Cooper reporting the results of this year's trapping and an invoice for his
services. Fifty-five geese were trapped at a cost of $1,300.

In the past the city received numerous complains regarding goose droppings from the
public using Lion's Park and individual landowners on Lake Orono. The goal of trapping
is to reduce the goose population to manageable numbers, not to eradicate them from the
city.

Shortly, there will be an influx of migratory birds in the city, but the local geese have
been greatly reduced. An inventory of the goose population will be conducted next
spring to determine if trapping should take place again in 2003. Staff anticipates the
recommendation will be to temporarily suspended goose trapping.
