Background/D iscussio n The City authorized preparation of plans and specifications fox the Jackson Avenue/School intersection improvements in April 2002 The improvements include adding left turn arrows to southbound Jackson Avenue and westbound School Street. In addition, the improvement includes constructing a right rum lane on southbound Jackson Avenue. This will necessitate relocating one signal pole, the signal control box, and installing a longer mast arras. Once the plans were nearly complete, the project was put on hold as the City Council worked through a formal five-year Capital Improvement Program (CIP) and had a joint meeting with the school district, at which this intersection improvement was discussed. The resolution authorizing the advertisement for bids anticipates that the project will be constructed in the summer of 2008 when school is not in session. It is important to note that there will be a period of time (four weeks or longer) that the signal will not be operational, as the control panel and signal base is moved in the northwest corner; until such time that the mast arm and improvement is complete and the signal is xestazted. During the time that the signal is not operational, a temporary four-way stop control will be utilized. Financial Impact There is $350,000 identified in the 2008 CIP fox this improvement project.
