Case File: Temp Signs
Page 2
Staff has reviewed a few other ordinances and our current allowed time frame is one of the
longest allowed. Here is a list of a few adjoining communities:
C~ # of Davs # of Permits
Elk River 90 days 6 permits
Big Lake 60 days No Limit
Ramsey (42) 7 days @ a time 6 permits
Otsego 21 days No Limit
Maple Grove 10 days 1 permit
Staff is recommending that temporary signs be located on an approved surface as it easy to
verify the location of the sign as staff drives by as the location of the property lines are
usually not known.
The recommendation for only allowing signs advertising City functions on City property is
to avoid the possible issues of fairness and equal opportunity. Staff does not want to have
to be placed into a position to decide which non-profit organizations can place a sign on
City property?
There are a few other minor housekeeping issues with signs that staff would like to discuss.
One is that Section 30-866 references "construction signs" three times with three different
allowed sizes. A second item would be the fee we charge for sign permits. Currently we
charge different fees for different sized signs, but the staff time is typically not that different
for small or large signs. Staff would recommend one flat rate fox ease of administration and
customer service.
Staff will be looking for comments to begin drafting a final proposed ordinance.
S:\PLANNING\Case Files\2006\OA\OA Signs\Work Shop June O6.doc
