West, Fire Chief DATE: March 20, 1995 SUBJECT: Fire Chief Vehicle As you are aware, the Fire Chief s vehicle has been discussed in reference to the possibility of replacing if the need arose due to failure of the vehicle. With the onset of numerous mechanical problems, at this time, with discussion with Phil Hals, Street/Park Superintendent, I amrecommending that the City of Elk River purchase a new vehicle for the Fire Chief. The current vehicle is a recycled police car with numerous miles which has started to have excessive problems due to the age and past n n~ Wing experience of the vehicle. After meeting with City Administrator, Pat Klaers, and Public Works Director, Phil Hals, it was decided that the Fire Chief would pursue getting prices on a new vehicle for the Fire Department. The decision was made to look into a four door, four wheel drive, Blazer type vehicle. One in which personnel could be carried to and from emergencies when necessary. I surveyed the option of possibly finding a new 1994 Blazer or Explorer with the thought in mind that a `94 would be more fiscally responsible at this time. It is my thought that a new vehicle purchase for the Fire Chief would have an estimated life of between 8-10 years. The following are the quotes that came from various dealerships in the area. I first approached Tom Lawson at Saxon Chevrolet in the City of Elk River. My discussion with Tom in reference to the possibility of finding a `94 or looking at a new `95. Mr. Lawson expressed to me that he felt that there were no `94's left at this time. We then proceeded to work up a price fora 1995 Chevrolet Blazer four door, 4X4. The purchase price for the City of Elk River from Saxon Chevrolet is $23,382. My next contact was with Tom Knutson, a resident of the City of Elk River who works for Village Chevrolet. I also expressed with him the possibility of finding a `94 Chevrolet Blazer or a `95 Blazer. He sent me a quote referring to both `94 and `95 models. The 1994 new Chevrolet Blazer quoted from Village Chevrolet is $20,750. In contrast, the new `95 Blazer comparably equipped would be $23,250. I then contacted Wade Turner from Elk River Ford Chrysler. I wanted to get a • comparable bid on a Ford Explorer with the same type options that a Chevrolet Blazer would have.
