Sandblasting is one of the highest risk <br />occupations when it mores W silicosis and crystalline silica dust <br />exposure. One of the main reasons is the high concentration of <br />quartz or other high crystalline slice wrAent minerals in the <br />abrasive sands used in sandblasting operations. Roughly 5 percent, <br />or 100,000, of the warkers in the United States that are exposed tc <br />crystalline silica dust on the job are employed as sandblasters. <br />Many other acaepaUons irtvotve sandblastng on a partdma heels. <br />Sandblasting is typic~ly used la dean ar remove anything from <br />automobfie paint to sand from famdry castings. Sand (often <br />containing high rystalline slice concentration} is forced inm a high- <br />pressure stream with compressed air or steam and used as an <br />abrasive agent for many types dcleaning snd surface preparation <br />jobs. Silica sand can break tlown to very small partides during <br />sandblasting operations. This freshly ground silica tlust lands to <br />lead Oo the quicker-to-progress acute and accelerated forms of <br />sliicosis or sandbtasistg disease. <br />SNdfes have shown that many sandblasters Fnve already died of <br />silicosis or silica disease.
