ITEM#: 5.2.

MEMORANDUM

TO: Mayor and City Council

FROM: Terry Maurer, City Engineer

DATE: July 9,2007

SUBJECT: Discussion on Recommended Alternatives for TH 169

This item was on the City Council agenda June 18,2007. After a lengthy discussion with
Craig Robinson, MnDOT's project manager for the TH 169 corridor, the City Council
decided to table any action until the July 9, 2007 work session so that MnDOT and their
consultant, the SRF Group, could be available and have graphics to answer more specific
questions about the Main Street and highway intersection.

As the City Council will recall, there are two alternatives for an interchange at TH 169 and
Main Street being considered. The first is a folded diamond which has a much larger
footprint, and therefore would require the acquisition of more property. The second
alternative is a center point interchange which has a less disruptive footprint but may require
modifications to the access to adjacent properties which will remain.

Because Councilmember Farber will be absent from tonight's discussion, I am asking the
Council to discuss which alternative would be most appropriate for the interchange at TH
169 and Main Street. We will then bring this back for approval and resolution at the July 16
meeting. In the meantime, Councilmember Farber will have an opportunity to meet with
MnDOT representatives and their consultant before the July 16 meeting in order for him to
hear the information presented tonight and consider which interchange may be the most
appropriate.
