Brief summary of organization history, including the date your orgauization was <br />established. <br /> <br />The Lake Orono Improvement Association, Inc. was formed in 1971 in response to water quality <br />and management issues. <br /> <br />2. Brief summary of organization mission and goals. <br /> <br />The mission of the LOlA is to improve the water quality, fish habitat and aquatic vegetation. <br />The goals to accomplish the mission include educational efforts to the residents on the lake as <br />well as in the greater community, yearly monitoring of the lake for fecal coliform, and <br />phosphorus/chlorophyll-A, fish stocking, goose trapping and eradication of invasive non-native <br />aquatic vegetation such as curly leaf pondweed. <br /> <br />3. Brief description of organization's current programs or activities, including any <br />service statistics and strengths or accomplishments. Please highlight new or different <br />activities, if any, for your organization. <br /> <br />Survey sent out by city to determine knowledge of storm water issues <br />Secchi disc measurements since 1994 <br />Water quality monitoring (phosphorus/chlorophyll-A, fecal coliform) <br />Fish stocking <br />Lake shore restoration proj ects <br />Communication programs (web site, newsletters, and directory) <br />Social events (Progressive dinners, smelt fry, Luau on the Lake, Annual Dinner) <br />Draw down of lake to eradicate curly leaf pondweed (fall 2003) <br />Dredging of Lake (1998) <br />Annual goose control <br />Lake Orono Water Quality Committee <br /> <br />4. Number of board members, full-time paid staff, part-time paid staff and volunteers. <br /> <br />LOlA has 4 officers and 7 representatives. A committee to address water quality issues, called <br />the Lake Orono Water Quality Committee, has 7 members plus a SWCD employee and city staff <br />employee <br /> <br />5. Description of any other funds or services leveraged for participants in this <br />program. As a reminder, HLP Implementation grants are meant support actions that are <br />proactive (rather than remedial), or - in cases where restoration is necessary -- that treat <br />"causes not symptoms." <br /> <br />The LOIA receives funding from the City of Elk River for specific projects such as goose <br />trapping, fish stocking, and water quality monitoring. The LOIA is also eligible for funding <br />from the Elk River Watershed Joint Powers Board for implementation ofBMPs and education. <br />
