As the Council may recall, the City and
County also discussed the acquisition of an additional 1.12 acres in order to
preserve all of the trees in this vicinity (see attachment). The County's final
decision was to only sell 1.3 acres to the City.

After the City obtained park dedication land south of the fairgrounds from
the developer (which included all of the wooded area) it became apparent that
the City should attempt to obtain more land from the County for the
extension of Orono Parkway in order to preserve this wooded area. A
compromise proposal to obtain an additional .67 acres of land has been
discussed with the County staff. This proposal would save all of the
"substantial" trees in this vicinity. The compromise proposal saves some
trees that are of the 15-24 inch variety which would be removed if we could
not obtain any more right-of-way. The trees that would be lost even with this
extra .67 acres are generally of the 4-8 inch variety.

The City Engineer will have a more detailed map to show the City Council at
Monday's meeting, but the general request from the staff is to have the City
Council formally request from Sherburne County, the purchase of .67 acres
for the extension of Orono Parkway. The City paid approximately $5,800 per
acre for the first 1.3 acres and we anticipate a similar price being acceptable
to the County if they are willing to sell us any additional land.

.

P.O.
