<br /> <br /> <br />MEMORANDUM <br /> <br />TO: <br /> <br />Mayor and City Council <br /> <br />FROM: <br /> <br />Lori Johnson, City Administrator <br /> <br />DATE: <br /> <br />October 16,2006 <br /> <br />SUBJECT: <br /> <br />Follow up on Contributions to Elk River Area Arts Alliance <br /> <br />Following the Elk River Area Arts Alliance presentation, the Council requested additional <br />information from Laurie Beil, Executiv-e Director of the Arts Alliance, and from city staff. <br />Attached is a letter from I:vls. Beil ,vith additional documentation responding to the Council's <br />questions about funding and programs. <br /> <br />Further, attached is contribution data from 1998 through 2006. The city has contributed to <br />the Arts Alliance $10,000 for the last four years and benveen $5,000 to $8,000 per year prior <br />to that. <br /> <br />~At the Councillneeting, Mayor I<linzing also commented on the fact that the city cannot <br />give to all charitable organizations. She is correct in that the statutes allow cities to <br />contribute to only a select group of organizations such as food shel\ies, historical societies, <br />senior and youth centers, and artistic organizations. Attached is the statute for appropriation <br />for artistic activities. The contributions to the Elk Ri~ler i\rea Arts Alliance fall under this <br />statute. <br /> <br />This issue \vill be discussed again when the general fund budget is set.
