City of Elk River
REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
Agenda Section Meeting Date
Administration October 16, 2006
Item Description
Reco 'tion of Reserve Officers

Item Number
5.l.

Prepared by
effre A. Beahen, Chief of Police
Reviewed by

Introduction
The Police Reserve Unit has five reserve officers who are "retiring" from the unit and will be present to
receive recognition for their service to the City. At a minimum, each of these reserve officers has put in
190 hours for each year worked, which includes meetings twice a month, first aid training, reserve rides
on weekends, as well as the 4th of July and parade details. Many of the reserves who are retiring have put
in more than double or triple those yearly hours, working school events, responding to emergency
call-outs, patrolling on Halloween and participating in child print details, public fairs, traffic details and
other duties as assigned. In many of their cases, when they are ready to leave the reserve force, they have
donated thousands of hours to the City of Elk River and those that we serve. Their unselfish dedication
and willingness to donate such a tremendous amount of their time, saves the City substantial money, and
allows the police department to handle those incidents that would otherwise be very difficult without the
logistical support of these skilled volunteers.

Discussion
The reserves are leaving after a variety of service career lengths, although some have been here for almost
twenty years. They are leaving for many reasons, including family or career changes and relocation.
Officer Suchy, Investigator McKernan and Captain Rolfe will be present to award the reserves a small
token of the City's appreciation for their service and dedication as volunteers.

Financial Impact
Approximately $30 per reserve officer was spent for the recognition gift.

Action Requested
Join us in giving our thanks for these volunteer's time and service to our community.

Council Action

Motion by _

Second by _

Vote

Follow Up

C:\Documents and Settings\tallard\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLKF\REQUEST COUNCIL ACTION (5).doc
