the

Area Arts

"Eddy...A currant that runs contrary to the main CUfTant or tradition as of life, art or philosophy; a hyway.

· October 2006
Edition Number 62

Performance Series 2006-07

The ERAM Performance Series
committee has come out of its huddle and
announced the lineup for 2006-07, an
exciting mix of classical guitar, jazz,
ballet, Civil War ballads, fiddling, tap and
dance kicking off Friday, October 13 with
Robert Bluestone and Sunday, Oct. 22
with the Continental Ballet Company
performing "Sleeping Beauty." The
Zabee Theater will house both
performances.

Bluestone began playing as a child when
his uncle gave him recordings of guitar
master Andres Segovia. Suddenly the
guitar took on a new meaning, something
more than wood and string; in the right
hands, it could become an extension of
the artist, and a voice of many moods and
languages. After finishing his master's at
Eastern Michigan University, Bluestone
spent two years in Mexico where he
studied with Manuel Lopez Ramos.

"There's something so personal about the guitar," he has said. "You're holding it in your
arms. The means of sound are your hands. As you play different notes you can feel it
vibrate. I've always loved the sense that its voice becomes your voice."

Bluestone's concert will include material from a repertory that spans four continents and
four centuries, including Spanish, jazz and classical pieces.

Continental Ballet Company's "Sleeping Beauty" is story telling with a kick. The fairytale
comes alive with Russian ballet artists Tatiana Berenova and Pavel Homko in the lead
roles. The story finds the young beauty asleep, dozing for a hundred years in her
enchanted castle, until the prince arrives and plants his kiss.

Continental Ballet makes its home at the Bloomington Center for the Arts and is a
nonprofit organization with a mission
to foster the growth and appreciation
of classical ballet. The company has
been awarded recognition by the John
F. Kennedy Center for the Arts in
Washington, D.C.

Tickets for Bluestone and Continental
Ballet are now available and are $15
for adults, $12 for members and
seniors and $5 for youth. Group rates
are available. Look for a mailing
about the series in September.

Series Performers

Robert Bluestone, classical
guitar,Oct. 13 at Zabee Theater

Continental Ballet, "Sleeping Beauty,"
Oct. 22 at Zabee Theater

Buckets & Tap Shoes, drumming and
dance, Jan. 11 at Zabee Theater

George Mauer Band, jazz, March 3 at
Zabee Theater

Ken Waldman & Pop Wagner Family
Show, fiddling and poetry, March 25 in
the Little Theater

Robert Trentham, songs of the Civil
War, May 6 at Zabee Theater
