<br /> <br />City of Elk River <br />REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION <br />Agenda Section Meeting Date <br />Administration October 10, 2006 <br />Item Description <br />· Archaeological Dig Presentation <br />· Resolution Acknowledging Alan Hoebelheinrich for his <br />Outstandin Citizenshi in the Ci of Elk River <br /> <br />Item Number <br />5.2. <br /> <br />Prepared by <br />Rebecca Hau , Environmental Admin <br />Reviewed by <br /> <br />Introduction <br />During the weekends of July 27-30 and August 3-4, the Heritage Preservation Commission (HPC) in <br />cooperation with St. Cloud State University (SCSU) continued the archaeological work at the Alan <br />Hoebelheinrich property off Twin Lake. <br /> <br />Discussion <br />Approximately 32 volunteers were able to participate in the excavation, spending at least 4 hours getting <br />hands-on experience. There were also several people who came for the tours. The City was able to <br />receive donations from area businesses for fmancing, food, and beverages. The HPC and SCSU believe <br />this is a public educational opportunity rarely matched in the State and believe this work to be valuable to <br />the community. <br /> <br />Dr. Richard Rothaus, Professor from St. Cloud State University will be giving a brief presentation on <br />what was found this summer and what we hope to find in 2007 if the project is approved to continue. <br /> <br />The City would also like to recognize Alan Hoebelheinrich for being an outstanding citizen in allowing us <br />to excavate on his property the last couple of years and continue in 2007. <br /> <br />Financial Impact <br />$10,000 out of HPC budget and staff time <br /> <br />Attachments <br />Resolution Acknowledging Alan Hoebelheinrich for his Outstanding Citizenship <br /> <br />Action Requested <br />Staff is requesting the Council to approve continuing the archaeological work at the Hoebelheinrich site <br />in 2007.
