ACH, CITY PLANNER .~/L- DATE: JANUARY 27, 1994 SUBJECT: REQUEST TO ATTEND OUT OF STATE CONFERENCE Each year the American Planning Association (AP A) organizes a national conference for all professional, elected, and appointed officials involved with planning issues. This year's conference is being held in San Francisco on April 16, 1994, through April 20, 1994. e I have attached a list of conference sessions that will be conducted during the 4 1/2 day event. The conference typically offers a wide variety of topics covering the entire gamut of planning issues. Some of the topics that will be discussed that could be brought back and applied to Elk River include: . Growth Management Strategies . Transportation Planning . Update on Legal Issues . Wetland Protection . Trends in Housing Industry · Computer Applications for Planning . Economic Development . Urban Design Standards In addition to the conference sessions that are held at the hotel, numerous mobile workshops are offered. These mobile workshops are opportunities to visit developments and experience first hand the success and/or failures communities have discovered in these particular developments. The 1994 Planning Department Budget, as adopted by the City Council, programmed expenses to cover attendance at a national conference. The cost for conference registration, air fare, hotel and meals, will total approximately $1,200. Obviously, early registration, scheduling a hotel room, and booking air fare in advance will provide the opportunity to obtain the best rates to attend the conference. e In conclusion, I respectfully request the City Council support to attend the National Planning Conference in San Francisco.
