rei --'\)
( )j
Ill{

INFORMATION

TO:

PAT KLAERS, CITY ADMINISTRATOR

d

River

FROM:

CLIFF SKOGSTAD, BUILDING OFFICIAL

DATE: MAY 14, 1993

SUBJECT: COUNCIL MEMBER CECILIA SCHEEL'S
LETTER DATED MAY 10, 1993,
REGARDING ADDRESSING SYSTEM FOR
ELK RIVER

After reviewing the letter from James C. ,Church (sent to
Council member Cecilia Scheel), I do sympathize with his
feelings toward the grid system and the outcome of his
address. However, until such time that a better way of
addressing the city of Elk River is developed, his address will
have to remain the same.

.

This grid system, which the Minneapolis postal system bestowed
upon us, does not give me the latitude for altering addresses.
If we lived in a perfect world where all streets ran "true"
north and south and all avenues ran east and west, this system
would work in a much better way. Since our roads curve north,
south, east, and west, as does 193rd, it puts Mr. Church's
address to the south of 193rd, where in reality it appears as
though it should be to the north. If we were to change these
five house numbers, it would change every address to the north
on Baldwin Street and would create a larger problem.

Prior to addressing these five homes in Hillside Addition, I
talked to Russ Anderson, Fire Chief, Bob McCartney, Assistant
Fire Chief, and the 911 representative, and determined that
this would be the best solution. Mr. Church referred to the
911 emergency people, and with those comments I must admit,
since I am on the fire department and ambulance service, I have
found our grid system to be confusing, however, with the grid
system we can get to the approximate area. Most of our
confusing fire and medical calls are more in the cul-de-sac
areas than the five digit numbering system.

I wish to remain
will accept any new
of mine and Terry
further information
provide it for you.

open minded with the addressing system and
ideas to simplify a very frustrating part
Zajac's responsibility. If you need any
regarding this matter, I will be glad to

.

P.O. Box 490 · 13065 Orono Parkway · Elk River, MN 55330 · (612)' 441-7420 · Fax: (612) 441-7425
