Elk River Parks & Recreation
Indoor A.ir Quality Assessment
lEA Project No. 7805-1301

Page 7

. Controlled conditions, such as physical isolation and negative air pressurization of the abatenlent area,
should be used to protect adjacent areas and individuals from fungal spores that are released \vhen
fungal-contaminated materials are removed. lEA can provide a specification for renloval activities, if
desired.

. The conditions that led to moisture infiltration and resultant fungal gro\vth need to be corrected. If
these conditions are not corrected, fungal contamination \villlikely recur on the replaced materials.
Based on the location and type of fungal organisnlS present, moisture intrusion appears to be occurring
through the lo\ver portion of the exterior \valls and, possibly, through the concrete floor slab.

Please contact lEA if you \vould like further assistance \vith the implenlentation of these reconmlendations.

6.0 Standard of Care

Information provided in this document is based upon current and generally recognized scientific and
technical understanding of the issues presented. Indoor air quality problenls such as sick building
syndrome (SBS) can have many causes and, SOilletimes, these causes are not readily apparent. In addition,
some causes may be illasked or hidden by conditions or activities in the building. As a result, the
conclusions and recon1ll1endations do not guarantee that all factors have been identified and that all issues
\vill be resolved if the recomnlendations are inlplemented. The conclusions and recomnlendations made in
this docunlent are our professional opinion and are based on the observations made and conditions present
at the tinle of the investigation, discussions \vith individuals involved, and the results aftests and/or
measurements perfomled. Follo\ving or implenlenting the recommendations does not provide conlplete
protection from future building occupant irritation or possible health consequences that may be caused by
indoor environnlental conditions. No \varranty is implied or intended.

Sincerely,

Revie\ved by,

{dzitjucbl

rA:S~ie Henckel, erH
Senior Project Manager
Indoor Envirolilllents Division

Tom Kapfer, CIH
Division Manager
Indoor Environnlents Division

Ene.

C:\Documents and Settings\tallard\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLKF\attach to 5 8.doc
