Employee
Highlight

City well represented at conference

4fe City of Elk River received much
licity as 5 representatives attended
Minnesota State Planning Confer-
ence in Duluth, May 8th thru 10th. This
year's state-wide Conference Chair was
Rita Johnson, also Chair of the Elk
River Planning Commission. Commis-
sioner Don Spotts was a panel member
for one of the program sessions. Com-
missioners Robert Bischoff and Mary
Eberley, and Janelle Szklarski of City
staff also attended and assisted with
Conference arrangements. Johnson and
Mary Eberley joined 6 other planners
from various Minnesota city staffs and
consulting firms to plan the conference.
The Conference has traditionally been
held in the Metro area but a Greater

Regulations

Continued from page 3
Ordinance or feel that it may have some
affect on your property, please watch
the &w: lli.wi for further updates or
contact the Building & Zoning Depart-
ment at City Hall. A map is available at
City Hall which shows the location of all
of the water bodies protected by the
Shoreland Management Ordinance.

!ecisions

Continued from page 1

the public through the public hearing
process. After all public concerns were
heard, the Council deliberated and
passed a new home occupation ordi-
nance.
And that, in a nutshell, is how deci-
sions are made in Elk River. By follow-
ing this process, we can ensure that all
sides of an issue are presented before
any decision is made. Not all will agree
with every decision made, not even
members of the City Council, but, in the
end, the process we follow will ensure
that those who want to give input on an
issue will be allowed to and that their
concerns will be considered when mak-
ing the final decision.

Projects

Continued from page 2

assessments is not pleasant. We try to
make assessments as fair as possible for
Ise projects. The existing system also
ides an appeal process for the payor,
. .. cessary.
Whatever project is underway in your
neighborhood, please try to be patient.
In some respects, you are watching
history in the making.

Minnesota site was selected this year in
hopes more out-state representatives
would attend. Eberley noted she also
hoped more Planning Commissioners
would be encouraged to attend if greater
emphasis was placed on involving the
citizen planner. Programming was de-
signed to include more topics ofinterest
to citizens, and "it evidently worked,"
she stated. Responsible for registration,
she noted record attendance, and the
best representation by citizen planners
ever recorded. "People could not help
but notice the City of Elk River was at
the Conference" Rita Johnson stated.
"Our people did a fine job representing
the City.

Procedure for

handling sanitary

sewer problem

If the sanitary sewer at your residence
or basement ever begins to back up into
the basement, you should call the City's
Sewer Department at 441-5136 BE-
FORE you call a repair service. An in-
spection will be performed by our sewer
personnel to determine whether the
problem is in the owner's sewer line or
in the City's sewer main. If the City
main is clear and not the cause of the
problem, then the sewer backup prob-
lem is being caused by the owner's line
which hooks to the City main. This
procedure of a quick phone call to the
City may save you the costly expense of
repair service ifthe sewer problem is in
the City main. The City main is the
responsibility of the City, but the sewer
line hookup to the main is the responsi-
bility of the property owner.

Cliff Skogstad

Cliff Skogstad is the Building Official
for the City of Elk River.
