ITEM 5.5

TO: MAYOR & CITY COUNCIL

FROM: GARY SCHMITZ, RECYCLING COORDINATOR
DATE: JANUARY 20, 1993

SUBJECT: 1992 SCORE FUNDS

In 1992, the City of Elk River received a SCORE Grant from
Sherburne County in the amount of $1,948.00 to hold a leaf
drop-off day in the fall of 1992. Last fall, Sherburne County
held a county-wide drop-off program which had several drop-off
sites (including one in Elk River). The County's compost
drop-off day spanned over four weekends. Therefore the City
decided not to duplicate the leaf drop-off function.

I am requesting the Council's permission to ask the County to
use the unspent SCORE monies to fund the Christmas tree
shredding program that was held on January 9 and 16, 1993, at
the Fire Station. The City collected and chipped over 3,000
trees. The City will use the shredded bark for weed
suppression along City trails. I feel the Christmas tree
shredding program proposal is an excellent use of SCORE funds
and should meet the intent of the County SCORE Composting Grant.

.

.

720 Dodge Avenue N.W., Elk River, Minnesota 55330 (612) 441-7420
