Memorandum

To: Parks and Recreation Commission

From: Jeff Shelby, Parks and Recreation Manager

Date: February 11, 2026

Subject: Parks and Recreation Staff Report
Senior Activity Center
As of early February, 429 memberships have been sold, which is slightly higher than this time last year.
Average daily attendance was 77 check-ins per day. Morgan Young recently started as the Senior Activity
Center Assistant on January 20 and is working part-time. There has been a great deal of interest in the
volunteer greeter position. Kris Niebler is the newest front desk volunteer, bringing the total number of
volunteer greeters to six. Art classes continue to fill quickly each month, and fitness classes have reached
capacity. Beginning in February, new classes have been added on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays. There
has also been an increase in requests for additional ongoing activities such as Pinochle, Bunco, and other
games, along with continued interest in expanding art class offerings.
Community Events
The last winter walk of the season was on Monday. We saw strong participation throughout the season
and look to continue and possibly expand for next season due to the community interest. The indoor
farmers markets continue to go well and although the attendance is lower than the outdoor season
those that attend appreciate being able to pick up the market finds and stay connected to the
community. Registration is going well for the outdoor market season and businesses are confirming
sponsorships again for 2026. First Bank has committed funds to the new Evenings at Orono, which will
allow our department to enhance the events.

Sports/Programs
Adult leagues are running smoothly, and registration is open for spring/summer adult men’s softball
league. Flag football registration is also going well in the early stages. We are currently taking applications
for the On-Site Supervisor position and applications for referees will be opening on February 23. Warren
will be hosting the annual city/youth association meeting on February 25. The upcoming field use season,
projects, and tournament information will be a few of the topics discussed. The bleachers are set to
arrive in mid-April for Field 6 at the PT Complex.

Ice Rink
Through February 2, the warming house has been open for a total of 39 days. During the times we have
been open, there have been 3,498 people using the rink/warming house at the Handke Pit. The ice
Page 21 of 22
