PRESENTATIONS, AWARDS, AND RECOGNITION

6.1 Sherburne County Administrator Update
Sherburne County Administrator Bruce Messelt provided the Council with the following updates:
▪ Pilot bus service program to replace the Northstar Commuter Rail, as outlined in his
presentation in the packet record.
▪ State legislation inhibiting data centers from locating in Minnesota, which resulted in challenges
to sell the former Sherco Plant land in the City of Becker. He noted they will ask the legislature
to reconsider an exemption for this parcel of land.
▪ The County Board is revisiting the 30-year moratorium on nuclear power.
▪ County Road 11 turnback to the state as the road is getting too busy to be a county road.
▪ Unfunded Federal and State mandates are creating a financial burden for the county.
▪ Tobacco ordinance consideration by the county board to limit vape products.
▪ Software implementation to protect the county building due to two previous active shooter
issues. He stated they would be offering this technology to the schools as well.
▪ Implementation of the IPAWS (Integrated Public Alert and Warning System) and the outdoor
warning signs are now becoming obsolete. They are evaluating what to do with the old
equipment.
▪ A contamination concern at the Elk River Landfill, and the need to remedy it now, because once
it's closed in the future, there is no guarantee that Waste Management will still be around to be
responsible for it.
