Memorandum

To: Parks and Recreation Commission

From: Jeff Shelby, Parks and Recreation Manager

Date: October 8, 2025

Subject: Parks and Recreation Staff Report
Senior Activity Center
We currently have 557 members and we average 75 visitors per day. Popular September programs
include a free art class sponsored by Rum River Art Center, a card making class, the monthly pool
tournament with Monticello, music event with Tim Patrick, and a day trip to RedHead Creamery. We have
hired Lani McClurg as the new Senior Activity Center Assistant and her first day was October 7.
Memberships for 2026 will go on sale at the end of October.
Events
Rivers Edge Commons Park is decorated for fall and made possible through the collaboration
between our department, DERBA, and generous donations from Spikes. The fall scene will
remain up through November 4. Downtown Trick or Treating will take place on Friday, October
24 from 2 – 6 p.m.

The final dog event of the season is scheduled for Tuesday October 14. All dog events have seen
steady attendance, and we appreciate the sponsorship from Spikes and Chuck and Dons to
make these possible. The last outdoor market of the season will be tomorrow from 3:00 – 6:00
p.m. There will be a 3-week break before the market heads indoors to the YMCA on the first
Thursday of the month beginning November 6.

Sports/Programs
The men’s softball league is done for the year. Women’s volleyball is off to a great start with
many competitive matches. Planning for winter activities is ongoing, along with new summer
program ideas. More details to come soon!

Fields
We just wrapped up our busy softball/baseball tournament schedule for the season this past
weekend. While there will still be a few games, the only remaining field use for 2025 is flag
Page 53 of 57
