Use Willard Cox oral interview, 1996, include oral material on commuting to the Continental
Grain Company in Minneapolis in 1957 and how he had to stop farming because of demands
of both jobs.
Robert Jochum oral interview, 1995. Use this interview to establish the 1950s car-pooling
commute. Jochum says he and father were among first area car-poolers.
Theme statement
Theme 1: People searching for opportunities have always recognized the unique resources of
Sherburne County.
Subtheme 1.1. People from all over the world chose to make Sherburne County their home;
their values shape our communities today.
Theme 2: Being on the edge where three ecological land types meet enabled easy
transportation and access to natural resources and economic resources.
Subtheme 2.2. Living on the edge of metro area, pineries, and western wheat fields provided
access for Sherburne County people to metro markets and jobs in other areas.
Subtheme 2.3. Trails, roads, and rails developed in the corridor along the edge of the
Mississippi River, prairie, pine forest, and deciduous forest.
Contemporary visitor relevance
1. There was moderate interest in transportation history among the Intercept Survey and
teacher respondents.
2. Members ranked transportation history among the top three subject areas.
3. Transportation is a key element in the county's history, and as new families see the
connections between the past and present, they may become more interested in the
history of transportation.
Desired Learner Outcomes:
1. Some visitors will list a succession of major types of thoroughfares that crossed through
Sherburne County. (cognitive)
2. Some visitors will locate historic transportation arteries in the appropriate areas on a
county map. (cognitive, psychomotor)
3. Some visitors will explain why Sherburne County is a good location for commuters.
(cognitive)
Visitor Experience
Consider marking this section out on the floor like a highway. Entrance to the section will be
marked with the newly acquired "Welcome to Elk River: Where City and Country Flow
Together" road sign. (Perhaps cross out Elk River, and add words Sherburne County under
Elk River without altering artifact?) Visitors will view photos and text on the changes in
transportation routes in Sherburne County on panels that resemble highway signs.
Visitors can page through a reproduction of the Putnam House register for 1857-1860 created
as a flipbook.
Sherburne County Historical Society Heritage Center Interpretive Plan, April 21, 2005, page 88
