I� <br />Churches <br />Union Church, 1118 Fourth Street N. W. (1881). Photo 2002. <br />The Yankee settlement of the 1850s and 1860s was reflected in the organization of the <br />first churches as well as early fraternal organizations and societies. The first organized <br />congregation in Sherburne County was the Trinity Episcopal Church. A first building <br />was erected was erected in the late 1850s at 1915 Second Street. 70 It was moved to Elk <br />River in 1877. The present building at 1326 Fourth Street N.W. dates from 1890-1. <br />The United Christian Society of Elk River was organized in about 1866, and the Union <br />Church about 1875. The present church at 1118 Fourth Street N.W. was erected in 1881. <br />The building was designed and built by W.F. Chadbourne of Elk River. The memorial <br />windows were dedicated in 1923. " The Meadowvale Church in Elk River township was <br />a branch of this congregation; it was created in ca. 1920. <br />The Methodist Episcopal Church was organized in 1875. The congregation met in the <br />Orono schoolhouse until a church was built north of the railroad tracks in 1889. A New <br />church was erected in 1916 along the Jefferson Highway near Minnesota Street. 72 <br />The Emmanuel German Lutheran Church was organized in 1918. The congregation <br />purchased the former Methodist Church. Services were initially held in German and <br />English; one German service per month was still held in the late 1930s. <br />The Norwegian Lutheran Church was organized in 1933 with about nineteen charter <br />members. The congregation originally rented the Episcopal Church for services, with <br />each congregation meeting several times per month.
