Elk River Commercial District
Property Description and Significance
PIN: Legal:
SHPO Inventory #: pending
Historic Name: Ardy's on Main
Current Name:
Builder / Contractor:
Original Owner/Tenant:
Architect/Source:
Date of Original Construction: 1911
Date of Survey: March 2002
Prepared by: Carole Zellie / Landscape Research
Photo: 19
Property Number:19
Description
This building is one of four stores in a one-story brick block that occupy Lots 3 and 4 of
Block 5. All have been extensively remodeled with false fronts of various types. This
property has been reclad with a shingled roof above a remodeled storefront. Unlike the
others, the red brick parapet of the original building is exposed.
Significance
This building has no historic integrity, although it is possible that a good amount of the
original fagade survives behind the modernizations. The historic building under the
facade alterations was built in 1911, after a fire that destroyed this section of the block.
The Elk River Post Office was among the tenants. The brick storefronts each had a single
entry with a display window surmounted by a glazed transom. The flat roof of the block
had a simple parapet with a corbelled cornice.
