30-33 inches from the bottom to the ground and at an approximately 45-degree angle.
Mounted in this way, the panels are easy to read, but do not dominate the landscape, are
difficult to see from the side, and do not block the object or natural feature being interpreted.
That's What They Said
Throughout the interpretive plan, you will find a recurring element called "That's What They
Said!" This is an exhibit strategy intended to respond to an expressed audience desire to
learn about the past in the words of people who have experienced it, and not from a museum
summary. These elements are often much longer than can be used in the exhibit, but they are
included to .provide choice in which ones to use. They may be used in layering text in the
final exhibit design. They could be placed as a second layer in smaller, less prominent type
from the summaries. Some of the longer quotations might be included in flipbooks located
within the appropriate exhibit section. As the exhibit design and final text and plan evolves
together, this strategy may take the form (in some instances) of sound files from oral histories
or recorded readings from journals or letters. In any case, this "in their own words" strategy
should be integrated into the exhibit with a consistent design approach, so this repeating
component can be readily found and understood by visitors.
Sherburne County Historical Society Heritage Center Interpretive Plan, April 21, 2005, page 8
