Panel ]—Bailey Station —Orlando Bailey -Era Story (24 x 36)
Visitors will read an edited version of the Orlando Bailey -Era story as described above.
Visitors should be able to review a map similar to the one created by Dominie Telschow,
Dec. 2, 2004, that indicates where the original site was, where it moved, and other
information. The stagecoach photo noted below could be used to help visitors visualize
stagecoach travel in the Bailey era. A caption would clearly indicate that this photo did not
depict the stagecoach in front of Bailey Station, but only one that would have been similar to
the Bailey Station stagecoach. The Bailey siding photo in the SCHS collection should also be
included.
Panel 2-Bailey Station —Vic Peterson -Era Story (24 x 36)
Possible Title: "Buy Johnny Bear a Pop"
Visitors will read an edited version of the Vic Peterson gas station era story as described
above. An SCHS photo of the gas station with the pumps should be part of the panel. The
diagram -showing where Vic's place would have been within the Hwy 10, 14-15 intersection
as indicated in Ethen's article would help visitors place its historic location on the modem
landscape. It would be ideal if a photo of Johnny Bear could be found to use here. If it cannot
be found, some photo showing a similar activity, such as the 1910 MHS image noted below
could be used. The photo of George Stonehouse working behind the counter of the gas
station could be used on the panel or inside the building.
A lot of fun and funny activities might spin off the Buy Johnny Bear a Pop stories.
Fundraisers could use the historic phrase as a slogan. It could be a great jumping-off point for
educational programs that explore the history of tourism along highway 10.
Differing Points of View
1. Some people may not think a 1930s gas station is historic or interesting.
Iconic object/media/activities
The iconic object here is the Bailey Gas Station.
Additional media and activities to tell the story (objects, film, images, sound, etc.)
1. Photo of George Stonehouse working behind counter of gas station (see KK's interview)
2. One or two of the recently acquired photos of Johnny Bear
3. Historic gasoline pump (or reproduction) to add to front of station.
4. Historic sign to add to front of station
5. MHS image of bear sideshow, 1910, SF 1.3r2; Neg 8544-A
6. Photo: Old Vic's Place building, ca. 1980s with gas pumps in front and Cold Pop sign in
Ethen, "History's Long Haul on Highway 10" article or other good SCHS photo of Vic's.
7. Diagram showing where Vic's place would have been located within the Hwy 10, 14-15
intersection, like in Ethen's article.
8. map similar to the one created by Dominic Telschow, Dec. 2, 2004, showing the history
of Bailey Station.
9. MHS image of stagecoach from Alexandria to Melrose, 1876; location HE2.5 r33;
negative 1266 (or similar one)
10. SCHS P1990.200.356 Bailey Gas Station?? Not sure of the image
Sherburne County Historical Society Heritage Center Interpretive Plan, April 21, 2005, page 18
