22 <br />More Places to Gather and Play <br />Public space improvements were considered along Main Street, within the city- <br />owned parking lot, and the Riverfront. These spaces were recognized for their <br />continued importance of hosting events, attracting people downtown, and <br />supporting a strong sense of place to support downtown businesses. <br />Public space considerations explored: <br />• The size, location, and design of any new public space in the city-owned <br />parking lot <br />• Opportunities for improving the Riverfront’s access, visibility, and design, <br />including trails, event space, natural areas, and navigating grade down to <br />the river. <br />• The relation of future public spaces downtown to Rivers Edge Commons. <br />• How sidewalks and the street could better support area businesses and <br />events. <br />• The recognition that new public spaces in Uptown will likely come about <br />through partnership with private developers. <br />Public Space Guidance <br />• The Farmers Market should continue to be hosted either in the city parking lot, or along Main Street. While a modest host structures could be of benefit, public space design and programming flexibility is important. <br />• Any new public space on Main Street in the city-owned parking lot should be modestly sized, while accomodating new development and public parking. <br />• While the riverfront could host some additional programming, most of this activity should remain along Main Street and Rivers Edge Commons. <br />• Any gazebo, bathrooms, or other structures along the riverfront should be designed with clear site lines to Main Street to promote use and safety. <br />• New public spaces in Uptown will be opportunity-driven, and in partnership with future private development. <br />MAIN STREET PUBLIC SPACE <br />RIVERFRONT IMPROVEMENTS <br />Exploration of a large public green space (above), smaller covered market (top right), and covered streetscape features (bottom right) <br />Riverfront improvements like trails (left), development-driven trails (middle), or pop-up vendor space (right) <br />CONCEPT EVALUATION <br />Public Space <br />Page 117 of 247
