3

As my five ye'lr olq living Angel, D'lviq (N'lmeq 'lfter D'lviq from the bible story D'lviq
'lnq GoIiGlth. D'lniel (from the story ofD'lniel in the lions qen) has leapeq mGlny mile
stones. Diagnoseq at thirteen weeks gestGltion with a rare conqition relGlteq to Spina
Binqa calleq Innencephaly anq having only five known survivors, Daviq was qiagnoseq
to qie. His neck hGlq literally collapseq que to the vertebra in his neck not forming
properly causing his heaq to rest on his back. The meqical fielq leapeq at the
opportunity for a science projectanq askeq "Woulq you give him to science to stUqy?"
I tolq them they woulq haveto wait for Daviq to qie of his own accorq. I believe Goq
has plans for him anq he will be maqe whole. For the next three months the meqical
staff attempteq to persuaqe me to "terminate" stating Daviq will never make it
anyway, how inconvenient he will be anq cramp our life (When were kiqs ever
convenientl) He will never live to birth. Ifhe lives to birth he won't last two weeks
even then he will be on machines for life support "... so you will have to pull him off
of the machines anyway...) To prove their point they put me on a fetal heart
monitor where we coulq see D'lviq's heart in color on this monitor. As the Doctor
was t'llking about his conqition 'lnq his I'lck of any ch'lnce for survival, his heGlrt rate
starteq to slow qown. As we watcheq it became slower anq slower. The Doctor
promptly st'lteq "He prob'lbly won't make it through the night" As a tear rolleq qown
my cheek I tumeq to my husbanq 'lnq saiq "This is the last time we or 'lny one will
qiscuss qeath or D'lviqis condition where he can he'lr it. I tolq them I qo not kill
chilqren, ifDaviq is to qie he will h'lve to qo it on his own. They then sent me back to
my regular OB who askeq me "what qo you wGlnt me to qo with you?" I tolq him to
tre'lt me like a regulGlr pregnancy. He promptly forgot Glbout me, tolq me to go to
Abbott on November gth for 'l C-Section.
D'lviq was qelivereq thGlt morning to a very nervous anq shaky meqical team.
The nurse that was supporting the PeqiGltric Specialist was qropping everything. I coulq
see her hanqs shaking from my table. ( I prayeq they qiqn't hanq my b'lby to her) My
sister was taping all of this. As they were resuscitating Daviq anq trying to stabilize his
breathing nurse tolq her I woulqn't want to see this anq that she shoulq stop filming
the operation. Julie stayeq strong 'lnq tolq the nurse that this might be the only time I
woulq get to see Daviq alive anq continues nlming. Once they got him st'lbilizeq they
starteq to run scans to see what theqamage was .GI(Daviq's he'lq was not connecteq to
his backas they once thought from the ultra sounqs). They came to me stating the
goOq news is Daviq has a new qiagnosis. The baq news is his prognosis isn't much
better.
This neW qiagnosis W'lS just 'lS serious but offereq 'l glimmer of hope for his
surviv'll. But not his progress. He now h'ls 'l qiagnosis ofSchizenceph'lly. A rare
conqition that h'ls a deft or cyst that qiviqes one half of the br'lin into two sections. It
acts very similar to Cerebral Palsy. The victims qisplay char'lcteristics of a stroke,
seizures, extra fluiq on the brain ( hyqroceph'lly) 'lnq very often h'lve many, m,my
