City of Elk River - Parks and Recreation Master Plan Chapter 4: Tomorrow’s Parks 38 tomorrowProvide Engaging Programing for the Entire <br />Community <br />The city offers a wide range of recreation offerings. These programs strengthen <br />community ties, give children and adults activities to keep them engaged, and <br />promote learning and physical activity. The Parks and Recreation Department <br />should continue to build on the current programming of events, senior activities, <br />athletics, and youth-focused camps and classes. As the community grows and <br />changes, it will remain important to fine tune and adapt the program offerings to <br />stay relevant to the community’s evolving needs. <br />Preserve Natural Resources and Greenways <br />The natural environment remains an important asset to the city and its residents. <br />Working to make sure every resident has close access to open space, natural <br />features, and nature-based recreation will ensure this vital characteristic of the <br />city is preserved for future generations. <br />Elk River has opportunities now to ensure the natural character is preserved by <br />planning for and protecting habitat and open space before development expands. <br />Conserving natural resources is not a luxury more fully-developed communities <br />enjoy, so foresight is necessary on the part of the city to maintain open space. <br />Once open space is gone it is extremely difficult and costly to bring back. <br />Page 106 of 240
