Memorandum

To: Parks and Recreation Commission

From: Jeff Shelby, Parks and Recreation Manager

Date: August 14, 2024

Subject: Parks and Recreation Staff Report

This report is a monthly highlight of department activities related to recent collaborations, strategic planning, staff
changes/developments, and park operations.
Elk Riverfest 2024
The family portion of the day at Orono Park was well attended and staff received great feedback. The evening SIPS
portion saw a decline in attendance in both attendees and vendors this year. The weather and location on the
asphalt presented some challenges for the day. We are currently getting a quote on electrical upgrades at Orono
Park to explore the possibility of combining both the daytime and evening portions in one location for the duration
of the day. The firework celebration originally scheduled for earlier in the month concluded Elk Riverfest this year.

Farmers Market
The University of Minnesota will once again be collecting data at the Elk River Farmers Market for the FM 360
metrics study. Elk River has participated since 2018 and this data provides information on shoppers, vendors, and
economic impact on Elk River.

Popsicles in the Park
The July Popsicles with Public Safety had great attendance and the final one for the season will be on August 20th
from 5pm to 7pm at Orono Park.

Senior Activity Center
The Senior Activity Center currently has 559 members and they’re averaging 66 member check-ins per day. The art
classes continue to be very popular and registration is currently full, with a wait list in place. The two most recent
day trips consisted of a trip down to New Ulm and a boat cruise on Lake Minnetonka. The next special event is
August 29th and that is a musical comedy jamboree featuring Kevin Doely.

Great Northern Regional Trail Grant
At the July 15th City Council meeting, Gina Hugo presented the Great Northern Regional Trail Grant application as
it pertains to Elk River after bringing it to the Parks and Recreation Commission. The council adopted the
resolution to support grant application, as the commission recommended.
