Memorandum

To: Parks and Recreation Commission

From: Jeff Shelby, Parks and Recreation Manager

Date: October 9, 2024

Subject: Parks and Recreation Staff Report

This report is a monthly highlight of department activities related to recent collaborations, strategic planning, staff
changes/developments, and park operations.
Farmers Market
The last outdoor market is October 10th. The indoor market will kickoff at the Elk River YMCA on November 7th.

Upcoming Events
The upper plaza at Rivers Edge is decorated for fall, thanks to the great collaboration between DERBA, Parks and
Recreation, and Spike’s. Downtown trick or treating will be held on Friday October 25th.

Parks
The trails at Woodlands were resurfaced on September 24th. We have contracted with Pro-Tec Design to install
electronic access controls on the entry doors at the Trott Brook barn. The doors will be able to be remotely
programed, locked, and unlocked for users, which will provide more security for those groups, while also ensuring
that reservation times are accurate. Rivers Edge is still slated to close by end of the month, as construction on the
seating area is scheduled to begin.

Senior Activity Center
At the end of September, the senior center had 569 members. Average daily attendance increased from 70 daily
check ins per day in August to 83 check ins per day in September. The center hosted a watercolor class, a music
event by Zach Johnson, multiple presentations on a variety of topics, as well as a day trip to Red Wing and
Stockholm, Wisconsin. 2025 memberships go on sale at the end of this month.

Kristin Gilbertson has resigned her position as the Senior Activity Center Assistant and her last day will be Friday
October 11th. That position is now posted, and we are accepting applications.

Fall Programs
Adult softball finished their season on October 8th. We had 9 teams competing. Women’s volleyball season has
begun, and we currently have 14 teams playing.
