Parks and Recreation Commission Minutes Page 7
March 13, 2024

Tim Mackey, the designer of the original disc golf course at Lion John Weicht Park said that there will
be a lot of people at the meeting with energy and input at the meeting, so he suggests having it earlier
and going up until right before the Commission meeting. Mr. Mackey continued to share current stats
and patterns of the growth of the game for example, Minnesota is in the top six of disc golf growth in
the United States. The City of Princeton is also adding a new facility.

Mr. Mackey also shared that having a destination course will bring money to the city. He described a
variety of levels of disc golf and provided a stack of handouts that he gave to Mr. Hecker to give to
the Commission. Eighty-nine percent of the courses are free. Shorter courses lead the way and getting
youth and new people to play is the focus to gain a grassroots movement of new people into the
sport. There are currently nine baskets at Lion John Weicht Park. Mr. Hecker purchased nine more so
we should have them stored somewhere. He recommends that we sell the older baskets to put that
money towards the new course.

Chair Anderson asked about advertising for the open house. Mr. Hecker confirmed that advertising
will be through social media and emailing former contacts.

Mr. Mackey said he can provide us with some links to his social media contacts. Parks and Recreation
staff will send invites to current contacts and can provide the commission members with fliers.

The Commission agreed that the disc golf meeting would go from 4:30pm to 6:00pm.

8.3 Install Tennis/Pickleball Nets for the Winter

Chair Anderson recommended that since the pickleball nets are already up we move this item to the
next meeting, and they can discuss if they want to change the policy for next year.

8. 4 Parks and Recreation Commission Ordinance Duties

Chair Anderson wanted to move this item to the next meeting, but Mr. Stremcha said that the City
Council wants to make decisions on it at their next meeting, so he suggested at least touching on it at
this meeting. He suggested to review 8, 9, 11 but Chair Anderson said they should go through them
all.

In the membership category Chair Anderson confirmed that they should have a chair and vice chair,
but they do not have a secretary.

Plan and implement city trail plans. Add parks, trails, and recreation facilities to 1-4.

The Commission agreed to remove number 5.

Change Number 6 to “Development of a comprehensive city park, trail, and recreation plan and
making recommendations on the implementation of the plan”.
