Services/Special Projects Director <br />Item Description Reviewed by <br />Resolution: Support for Hosting a MN GreenCorps Cal Portner, City Administrator <br />Member for the 2024-25 Program Year from the <br />Reviewed by <br />Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) <br /> <br /> <br />Action Requested <br />Adopt by motion, a resolution allowing the City of Elk River to enter into an agreement with MPCA if Elk River <br />is selected as a host site for a Green Corps member for the 2024-25 program term. <br /> <br />Background/Discussion <br />The Minnesota GreenCorps program, coordinated by the MPCA, aims to preserve, and protect Minnesota’s <br />environment while training a new generation of environmental professionals. Each member serves on a project(s) <br />one of four topic areas: <br /> Community readiness and outreach <br /> Energy conservation and green transportation <br /> Stormwater and forestry <br /> Waste reduction and recycling <br />Staff applied for the grant to focus on the sustainability goals of the ECC, and to reduce solid waste going to the <br />landfill. The latter would include an organics recycling pilot program at a local restaurant, with the intent of <br />expanding the program to all food service establishments. The members serve full-time at their host sites for 11 <br />months, from mid-September through mid-August. <br /> <br />Financial Impact <br />MN GreenCorps members are provided with stipends of $27,600 through the MPCA for completing a 1,700-hour <br />term of service. Upon completion of service, members are awarded an additional $7,395 as an educational award <br />to use toward higher education or toward payment of existing student loans.
