8.2 Pre-emptive design
Pre-emptive design can be very helpful in minimizing off-site sound
levels. This might take the form of track layout with grading and/or
berms or walls to shield sensitive off-site receptors from noise.
Erection of additional berms or noise barriers at critical segments of
track can be an effective method for shielding vehicle noise from
potentially exposed and impacted receptor sites. These must be
designed, however, to take the safety of drivers and spectators into
account.
