The Elk River Vision
A welcoming community with revolutionary and spirited resourcefulness, exceptional
service, and community engagement that encourages and inspires prosperity. Updated: August 2020
Request for Action

To
Multipurpose Facility Advisory Commission
Item Number
8.1
Agenda Section
Action Item
Meeting Date
March 14, 2022
Prepared by
Tim Dalton, FTCENTER Superintendent
Item Description
Plans for Tier III Junior Hockey Team at the
FTCENTER
Reviewed by

Reviewed by

Action Requested
Approve by motion, to continue to pursue agreement to house and plan facility updates necessary to
accommodate the MN Squatch Tier III Junior Hockey Team home venue at that FTCENTER.

Background/Discussion
Team Principal, Chic Pojar will present plans for MN Squatch, Trier III Junior Hockey Team to be housed at the
FTCENTER for the 2022-23 season. To house this type of team, alterations would need to be made to the facility
to accommodate a resident team locker room and office for team management. To create the locker room, we are
looking at combining the figure skating and referee’s locker rooms into one large team locker room. This would
mean that we would need to create some other type of locker room situation for our referees. The team would
utilize the unoccupied figure skating office also. We are working toward a five-year agreement with the team. We
have some preliminary cost estimates to make the needed facility changes. However, we have recently developed
some other less costly options. Timing is important, the team will need a locker room beginning September 1,
2022.

Financial Impact
There will be a cost to convert the space for the team, however once that is accounted for, however we will have
ongoing revenue from the ice that the team purchases for years to come. We will develop a detailed cost/benefit
analysis for the project/team residency. A good comparison is our various naming rights contracts. There is a
significant cost to brand the spaces, however we have ongoing revenue for a period of several years.

Mission/Policy/Goal
Utilize the Facility as a regional event center by housing a Tier III Jr Hockey team. Optimizing use of the arenas
by contracting ongoing ice sales in off hours.

Attachments
Power Point Presentation on Tier III Junior Hockey Team
