Beahen, Chief of Police 9-2-05 DATE: SUBJECT: Former DARE money As you are aware, an old DARE account was recently cleared out of the First National Bank, and the funds were given to the Elk River Police Department. Per your direction, I assigned Juvenile Investigator Peterson to work with the Chemical Dependency Staff at the High School to identify ways to utilize the funding to benefit the programs and youth in our area schools. The first items identified were two portable computers to be utilized by the school liaison officers while they are working in the schools. They do not currently have computer access while they are in the schools. A portable computer with wireless access would allow the officers to not only access our complete network back here at the police department, but all of our records systems as well as state and national data sources. The officers currently have to either call back here and have office staff look up information, or they have to drive back here and get the information themselves. The school district has agreed to allow our officers access to the school's wireless network- saving us any monthly access charges for that connection. (Typically about $60 a computer each month) The other items are program supplements that the school staff feel would greatly enhance their programs. I think those items which are listed on the attached document speak for themselves. I think the requested items are very appropriate alternatives for the use of the DARE funds, and I am requesting permission to go ahead and purchase now so that they can be utilized in this new school year. The DARE check is attached with this request.
