Enhance Bike & Pedestrian
Connections
There are areas within Elk River that have a robust side-
walk and trail system in place. Gaps in the trail and side-
walk network can be seen in the Elk River Trails Master Plan
which identifies proposed trail/walk corridors that could
be implemented in the future as opportunities to address
those gaps.
Given the uncertain timeframe for future improvements
to the Highway 10 corridor, the city should evaluate the
feasibility of constructing a grade -separated option to
better, and more safely, route bicyclists and pedestrians
over the BNSF railroad and Highway 10 into the downtown.
This capital improvement also has the potential to become
a signature, defining characteristic of Elk River. Adding
decorative elements to a pedestrian bridge or underpass
could highlight the connection between downtown and
residential and commercial areas to the north.
In addition, there are also opportunities to enhance
connections to the downtown area from the Great
Northern Trail. Currently the trail ends at CSAH 1(Elk
Lake Road). Select sidewalk improvements combined
with wayfinding signage could greatly improve trail user
experience. The community's Parks and Recreation Master
Plan also identifies wayfinding signage improvements as
a means to complete the connection between the Great
Northern Trail and the Mississippi River/downtown area.
Any directional signage created for pedestrians should be
prominent and provide clear direction to users and tie in
wayfinding for key destinations such as the downtown.
r
M
I
L
5
Example: trail andpark system map located at trail head
Example: trail wayfinding
e
Elk River Comprehensive Plan • Transportation & Mobility Plan
DIMITI ad10]6*1OWN DOW91ilkIWO
91
