in the city.
Very interested in Elk River History and preserving it.
Serving on a city commission seemed like a great way to be engaged with and volunteer in my
community, and those two things are very important to me.
I had followed the developments that led to the creation of the Furniture and Things Community
Event Center (known at that time as the Multipurpose Facility) and I wanted to help it reach its
potential and serve the widest range of people. I was primarily interested in the new Senior Activity
Center, but I saw it as one component that did not stand alone, but fit into the overall purpose and
program of the community center. I thought I could use my background and experience to make a
contribution to the community.
I wanted to know more about how commissions worked and to have a voice for our community.
I am a long-time volunteer from my careers in the Air Force and E-12 education. I am now fully
retired and among my goals is giving back in some way, form or manner, to the community. As it
relates to the question, the City of Elk River advertised a commission opening (Star News
article) which I had a specific interest in, but I was not selected [for that commission].
I was asked by ERYHA, but also felt I could be of value on matters that didn’t directly concern
youth hockey.
I felt the need to help our community through the Parks and Recreation, to continue to aid the
youth and to help correct a system that I thought was very one sided.
