Separation from Employment <br />Resignation <br />The purpose of proper notice is to ensure an orderly transition of responsibilities and open work items. <br />Holidays or the use of vacation, sick, or compensatory time may only be approved by the city administer <br />to be considered proper notice. <br />With proper notice, the employee will be compensated for any accrued, unused vacation time. If eligible, <br />s/he may also be compensated for a portion of banked sick leave as stated in the Severance Pay Section of <br />this policy manual. <br />Proper notice must be submitted in writing to the employee's supervisor. Employees working a typical <br />Monday through Friday schedule must provide notice at least ten (10) working days prior to the <br />separation date. Department directors must provide a twenty (20) working day notice. Employees <br />working a shift schedule that may include weekends and evenings shall provide a fourteen (14) calendar <br />day notice. <br />Non-exempt employees will be compensated for any accrued but unused compensatory time as of the <br />date of separation. <br />An unauthorized absence from work for a period of three (3) or more working days may be considered a <br />resignation without proper notice. <br />Failure to comply with this notice procedure may be considered reason for denying an employee future <br />employment with the city. <br />Termination <br />Employees terminated from employment have no right or expectation of payment of accrued vacation, <br />sick, and/or holiday leave time. <br />Retirement <br />Employees who retire from employment must follow the Resignation policy above and may be eligible <br />for retirement programs as provided by state or federal law. <br />Layoffs <br />The City Council has the authority to lay off any employee when such action becomes necessary as <br />determined in the city's sole discretion. The city will attempt to provide a ten (10) working day notice <br />prior to a layoff. <br />Severance Pay <br />An employee resigning employment may be eligible for a cash payment for a portion of unused sick <br />leave if the following conditions are met: <br />The employee must leave in good standing, not terminated by the city; and <br />S/he must provide proper notice of resignation as stated above with city administrator <br />discretion; and <br />13 <br />
