She noted the current ordinance limits chickens to parcels 2.5 acres and larger and
stated her lot is smaller than the requirement. She asked the City Council to review the ordinance and discuss
reducing the minimum lot size for the keeping of chickens on residential parcels.
In the spring of 2017, staff conducted two surveys to gauge the public opinion of chickens and assist in the
drafting of an ordinance to expand the limited opportunities available at that time. The Planning Commission held
two public hearings and the City Council ultimately adopted the recommendation from the Commission.
Since adoption of the ordinance, no complaints regarding permitted operations have been received, although code
enforcement has contacted a few residents regarding non -permitted operations.
Financial Impact
None
Mission/Policy/Goal
The ordinance discussion meets the changing needs of residents and seeks to maintain and improve their quality
of life.
Attachments
Section 30-803 relating to the keeping of chickens
Community Survey results
Planning Commission and City Council packets and minutes
The Elk River Vision
A welcoming community with revolutionary and spirited resourcefulness, exceptional
service, and community engagement that encourages and inspires pi ospei ly.
M
TUREJ
Updated.• August 2020
