Sherburne County Multi -Hazard Mitigation Plan, 2020 <br />protection standards that guide federally -funded projects in or near flood plains or along coastlines. <br />These new standards require federally -funded projects to either build two feet above the soo-year flood <br />elevation for standard projects and three feet above for critical buildings like hospitals and evacuation <br />centers; or build to the 500-year flood elevation (The White House, 2015). <br />Flood History in Sherburne County <br />The NCEI has recorded two floods and four flash floods in Sherburne County since 1996. The most <br />recent flood occurred in 2005, when street flooding was reported on the eastern side of the Mississippi <br />River in St. Cloud. In Big Lake, there was 4.9 inches of rain recorded within go minutes. In Elk River, a <br />car was stranded by floodwaters on a main street, and a total of 5.89 inches of rain were reported. In <br />Zimmerman, a total of 6.2 inches of rain fell. <br />A flash flood occurred in July of 2002, when four to seven inches of rain fell, flooding basements and <br />roads. Highway 16g was closed between Zimmerman and Princeton. The NCEI recorded $25,000 in <br />property damage. <br />Om April of zoos severe flash flooding occurred, causing $2 million in property damage in Sherburne <br />County. In Santiago a dike along County Road 11 collapsed, allowing water to crash into town. Around <br />twelve homes and businesses were flooded, and evacuations resulted. <br />Table zo below lists Sherburne County's historical floods as recorded by the NCEI. No deaths or injuries <br />were reported. <br />Table 20.
