Sherburne County Multi -Hazard Mitigation Plan, 2020
As part of Sherburne County's Multi -Hazard Mitigation Plan update, participating jurisdictions and
county personnel were asked to participate in filling out a two-part "Local Mitigation Survey" form. The
purpose of the survey was to gather information needed to support update of the plan and
development of local -level mitigation actions for the next five-year planning cycle. Following are the
responses from the county departments and jurisdictions that participated in the survey.
SHERBURNE COUNTY
Part A: Past Events & Vulnerability Assessment
1. In the last 5 years, has your community experienced any severe weather or disaster events
that posed risk to life safety, caused property damage, or incurred costs for recovery? Yes.
Sherburne County has experienced heavy rain, heavy snowfall, flooding, and tornados. In
March of 2017 Sherburne County was greatly impacted by one of the earliest recorded tornados
in the state of MN. The storm caused damage to private properties, trees, power lines and local
roadways.
March 6, 2017 a tornado touched down in Orrock/Blue Hill/Baldwin townships. Trees/debris that
fell on CR 4, CR 3.5, CR 42, CR g, and CR 2 were quickly removed and cleaned up.
Every year there are trees that fall on to county roads that partially or totally block the roadway.
The road is typically cleared in 2 hours or less.
Nearly every year there are areas of high water on or near county roads generally in the late
winter/early spring due to rapid snow melt combined with a substantial rainfall. Impact is
usually minimal and short duration.
Power outages have resulted in traffic signals without battery backup to cease to function.
Every winterthere are snow and ice events that contribute to risk of injury, death, and/or
property damage.
2. In the last 5 years, has your community taken any particular actions to reduce the
vulnerability of your community against future severe weather or disaster events? Public
Information Initiatives to inform our residents with things such as severe weather week, and
winter awareness week and through our social media pages (Facebook, Twitter).
As part of our Maintenance and Construction programs trees are trimmed or removed from the
Right -of -Way where possible. This helps to minimize road blockages and downed power lines.
Over the past 5 years we have increased our level of service for snow and ice events.
Page I K - 2
