Request for Action
To Item Number
Mayor and City Council 8.3
Agenda Section Meeting Date Prepared by
General Business I September 18, 2017 Cal Portner, City Administrator
Item Description Reviewed by
Information Security Committee
Reviewed by
Action Requested
Appoint, by motion, Councilmember
to the Information Security Committee.
Background/Discussion
The IT Division has worked diligently to ensure our firewalls and malware protections are as secure as
possible. ERMU requires even deeper asset security thus the ERMU leadership team identified
information security and physical security for water and electric distribution assets as a priority.
Following our Ransomware attack which was successfully foiled, we have looked further to find
vulnerabilities and educate staff.
We have worked with ERMU to develop a scope of work, reviewed quotes, and selected a consultant to
perform a joint information security assessment.
One of the early recommendations from the consultant was to develop an information security
committee which would assist with the development of policy language, perform and report on risk
assessment, develop data needed for the budgeting process, and assist with staff education and awareness.
The city and ERMU have initiated a management advisory committee and is seeking representation from
each of our governing bodies as any likely work product would require additional capital expenditure.
Further it would be helpful to have council/commission liaisons with greater depth of understanding of
our technology and vulnerabilities.
Financial Impact
N/A
Attachments
■ ERMU Management Policy
The Elk River Vision
A ravkoming community n4th revolutionag and sphited r esouirefulness, exceptional
service, and community engagement that encourages and inspires prorperzty
P0WERE1 Br
NATURE
