A. Artist Statement:
I make custom furniture and decor utilizing wood, metal, stone, resin and other mixed materials. My
favorite thing is combining these materials together to create one cohesive piece, to showcase their
beauty. My love of making things started years ago. Wood working started when I was a kid making boxes
to wrap my family's birthday presents in. Of course, they needed a hammer and pry bar to open them. It
really flourished when I became a homeowner and I needed new cabinets. I figured out I could make
them for far less than any store and I could make. them to match the existing woodwork in the home.
Working with metal came much later when my trailer which i purchased off Craigslist for$50 broke. I
figured it was a great time to learn how to weld and had nothing to lose since it was already broken.
Thank you,YouTube, for my crash course in this Oxy/Acetylene welding!
I've morphed my abilities into creating pieces that mean something creating form and function into
statements. Instead of creating something out of pure necessity,I create because it gives me joy and adds
beauty to my surroundings. I describe my personal artwork as showcasing the beauty of something that
was maybe misunderstood and cast off,so,when you look at a piece, you see the art first and the function
second.
My work with stone to this point has been mainly on a small scale.Adding small stones to the pieces I
am creating. Luckily since my family and I are very serious rockhounds. We spend most of our vacations
traveling the country mining out rocks and crystals. I pride myself on collecting the items I use to make
my art.
When I can collect and source the different components for my art pieces. I can create a full story
around my art piece.
B. General Information
For my piece I will be creating a large steal and stone sculpture. I have created a small mockup version.
This piece is not to scale and as it is created in its full version the shape will change slightly but the general
concept will be the same. My hope is to create a piece that will shadow the form of the Mississippi as it
travels through the Elk River area.Adding in large stones sourced from the Elk River area will truly create
a piece that resembles a flowing river.
I have also included an image of the mockup for ease of sharing. I believe though that seeing and being
able to touch a real piece would make the biggest impact.
