From:
Charlie Brandt
To:
Leesebera, Chris
Cc:
Subject:
[EXTERNAL] Karen Randall kennel
Date:
Friday, May 31, 2019 9:06:16 AM
Hi Chris & Planning Commission,
I had a very productive conversation with Ms. Karen Randall Wednesday evening. She was
understandably upset about my email and came over with her son, Tom, to discuss each issue. She
also took me on a quick tour of her property to show me the layout, her beautiful garden, and where
the dogs generally roam. After our talk, I'm optimistic about the private kennel issue.
My change of view is 100% due to Karen's explanation of a prior situation involving a family member
who caused a lot of grief to the neighbors. Turns out that person is no -longer at the residence, and I
don't think we'll have any more late-night construction noise, misc. large objects hurled over the
fence by him or hired contractors, etc. We exchanged contact information, and Karen & Tom
encouraged me to call or stop over with any issues. As far as I'm concerned, that's good enough to
make me forget prior grievances and focus on the issue at hand. With current knowledge of who
lives there now, there is zero intimidation factor for us.
The issue at hand ... dog barking. The concern is undeniable, as evidenced by comments from
multiple other neighbors. We can generally hear them inside or outside, whether we're in or not.
The dog noise in its current form is not unbearable; just irritating at times. My contempt for the
dogs was no -doubt escalated by the columniation of other things over the years.
Innovation is driven by demand, and in this case I think the pressure of neighbor concern has
encouraged Karen and family to get creative in finding ways to keep dog noise at a healthy,
neighborly level. In my opinion, the key is for Karen is to make our activities in the yard less
noticeable to her dogs. Maybe a window shade? Maybe filling gaps between some of the fence slats
so they can't see us as often? I'm not sure, but I'm also confident in their ability to find solutions.
I want Karen to keep her beloved critters as much as I want to spend time in our yard without
frenzied dog barking. She is a very compassionate person, and we both share an unconditional love
for animals and nature in general. I wish her AND her neighbors well, and I think we'll all benefit
from a conscious solution to minimize the impact of keeping the dogs around.
Furthermore, I'd be happy to talk with any concerned neighbors about my perspective before and
after my conversation with Ms. Randall. Thanks for your help and take care!
Charlie Brandt
