upgrading The claMshell <br />city hall is the heart of our local democracy. yet only a small percentage <br />of citizens have walked through its doors. indeed, the public gallery which <br />can hold 300 people sometimes sits empty during council meetings. <br />many factors contribute to the general lack of awareness of city hall’s <br />opportunities and resources. here are two simple ideas that could help. <br />signage & inForMation <br />If a citizen walked into City Hall <br />today looking for some information <br />about our local democracy, they <br />could be excused for thinking they <br />were in the wrong place.  The main <br />floor of 100 Queen Street West is <br />currently configured primarily <br />as a kiosk for developers and an <br />information centre for tourists.  For <br />example, there are 144 different <br />flyers and leaflets available in the <br />front lobby and not a single one of <br />them is about City Hall or mu- <br />nicipal government. No ward map. <br />No meeting calendar. No printed <br />materials about Community Coun- <br />cils, Standing Committees or public <br />deputations. <br />Fun FacT! <br />there used to be booklets <br />available in the lobby of city hall <br />all about local democracy but they <br />haven’t been seen in years.actual flyers <br />from toronto city hall
