➌ the city oF calgary <br />initiated a review of core ser- <br />vices in 2011, inviting citizens to <br />weigh in on their priorities for <br />city services and budget alloca- <br />tions. During the four month <br />process more than 250 events <br />were held and over 24,000 indi- <br />viduals participated via workshops, <br />surveys, community conversations <br />and social media platforms. Calgary <br />City Council has also adopted a plan <br />to establish a participatory budget- <br />ing process by 2016. <br />➍ toronto coMMunity <br />housing, the second largest housing <br />authority in North America, has been <br />practicing participatory budgeting <br />since 2001. Each year, tenants decide <br />how to allocate roughly $9 million in <br />capital funds. <br />have you Met toBi? <br />the toronto open Budget <br />initiative (toBi) advocates for <br />the addition of new opportunities <br />for public input, increased access <br />to information, increased public <br />education and the exploration of <br />long-term changes towards a more <br />participatory budget process.
