EGty1 ,., Request for Action
River
To Item Number
Mayor and City Council 4.13
Agenda Section Meeting Date Prepared by
Consent December 17, 2018 Tim Sevcik, Street and Park Superintendent
Item Description Reviewed by
Demolition of the Lion John Weicht Park Band ustin Femrite, Public Works Director
Shell Reviewed by
Cal Portner, City Administrator
Action Requested
Approve,by motion, the demolition of the Lion John Weicht Park band shell in preparation for park
improvements.
Background/Discussion
The band shell at Lion John Weicht Park was constructed in 1990 with the help of several individuals and
organizations. It has served the community for nearly 30 years supporting numerous recreation programs,
community events, and has served as a rental facility for local organizations. It has exceeded its expected
life span.
With concerns for its structural integrity, the band shell was inspected by the city building official in June
of 2018. The inspection found the structure did not pose an imminent threat to the public, but major
repairs were required if the structure was to continue to be used beyond 2018.
In addition to its current condition, the structures location is in conflict with future improvements
detailed with the Active Elk River plan. As a result, staff is recommending removal of the band shell to
eliminate the potential hazards and prepare for redevelopment of the park.
Staff solicited quotes for demolition of the band shell and received three quotes with the lowest quote
from Rachel Contracting of$7,900.
Financial Impact
Staff recommends utilizing$7,900 from the 2018 Park Maintenance Operating Budget for the demolition
of the Band Shell.
Attachments
■ Images of the Lions John Weicht Park Band Shell
The Elk River Vision
A PehoMing community 2a itb revolutionary and spirited resourcefulness, exceptional POWERED By
service, and community engagement that encourages and inspires prosperity INAWRE1
