Item 7.2.

MEMORANDUM

TO:

Mayor and City Council

FROM:

Stephen Rohlf, Building and Environmental Administrator

Sf<

DATE:

May 16,2005

SUBJECT: 2005 Clean-up Week Update

In concert with local haulers, the Elk River Landfill and volunteers from the community,
the City of Elk River hosted "Clean-up Week". Residents were allowed to bring various
items to the Elk River Landfill at a reduced price from April 25 through April 29. Clean-
up Week culminated with the traditional Clean-up Day at the Public Works Garage on
Saturday, April 30. The additional opportunity at the Landfill allowed participation from
residents that could not make the usual one day event.

Clean-up Week was a great success. This year 190 residents took advantage of going to
the Elk River Landfill throughout the week. Last year the week long opportunity at the
Landfill was done in the fall and 64 residents participated. This year during Clean-up
Day at the Public Works Garage 304 residents dropped items off and 109 people took
advantage of the Landfill site to bring their junk earlier in the week. The weeklong event
at the Landfill prior to Clean-up Day made for a much easier pace to manage at Clean-up
Day this year.

The City collected the following items:

2005
Appliances
Tires
Fluorescent lights
Electronics
Computers
Furniture
Car batteries

Cleanup Dav
166
114
333
118
109
74
68

Week
152
434
o
85
92
109
o

Scrap metal and household junk was also accepted at both locations. Staff wishes to
thank Randy's Sanitation and BFI for donating garbage trucks and drivers for help with
Clean-up Day.
